I was told today that if you're on the pill, there's no way besides a pregnancy test of knowing that you're pregnant, because you get your periods no matter what if you're on the pill. Is this true, though? Especially because you are supposed to get off the pill immediately if you are pregnant, it seems like still getting your period would be a bad thing.

It is not true that all women experience periods if they get pregnant while taking the Pill, but it is true that this happens sometimes. I conceived when I had been taking the Pill for 11 years. I had no typical signs of pregnancy, but I did have a lot of stomach trouble, mostly pain whenever I ate, but no vomiting or nausea. My doctor thought I had Irritable Bowel Syndrome until I had my yearly physical. We were all surprised to find I was pregnant and all ready 17 weeks along. I had 2 normal periods and one light period (which at the time I attributed to whatever was going wrong in my stomach!). Of course, I discontinued taking the Pill the day I found out I was pregnant. My doctor said there is no additional risk to the baby if mom takes birth control pills. Incidences of birth defects are the same (2-3%) for babies whose moms take birth control pills when unkowningly pregnant as those that don't take the Pill when pregnant.

Yes, for some women, myself included, you will still get a period if you get pregnant on the pill. They call it breakthrough bleeding. I was going into my fourth month before I missed my period. Yes you should quit taking your pill when pregnant, I didn't know i was pregnant, kept taking it, but she is perfectly healthy. My doc says because I took it right through the first trimester, when the major development is happening, the horomone levels were "normal" to the baby.
So it can happen.

Depends on what kind of pill you are taking. On a progestin only pill, you will most likely not have a period the entire time you are on it. If you suspect you are pregnant, do not take the pill.

I did get pregnant on a regular pill and I missed my period, too, though.

You get your period while on the pill. When you get pregnant, you don't have periods anymore. However, if you continue to take the pill after you are pregnant, it may cause a miscarriage.
