For some funny and witty books try:
- Anything by Harlan Coben (More of a dry humor with lots of witty remarks. You'll either love him or hate him.)
- Anything by Jennifer Crusie (More of a romantic comedy style, but still hilarious. Bet Me is my favorite, it's uplifting, funny and romantic. Genuis!)
- Dead Until Dark, Living Dead in Dallas, Club Dead, Dead to the World, Dead as a Doornail, Definitely Dead by Charlaine Harris (They're not funny as in laugh your head off funny, they are more of a "SERIOUSLY?!? did that just happen?" kind of funny.)

SCIENCE FICTION Everyone ignores sci-fi however in reality that a few books are almost part philosophy. Read Stranger in a Strange Land by way of Robert A. Heinlein, Prey by way of Michael Crichton, and 2001: A Space Odyssey or Rendevous With Rama by way of Arthur C. Clarke. Plus, I agree that Agatha Christie is a have to-learn. After Shakespeare and the Bible, she has offered probably the most quantity of books global ever. Her quality are And Then There Were None, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Murder at the Orient Express

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to teh Galaxy" by Douglas Adams, the best one, very sarcastic, very funny, so great to read.
"Me talk pretty one day" by David Sedaris, very funny to read but sometimes a very hard humor.
Books by Stephen Fry, more a hidden humor, but terribly good written.
Books by John Irving, sometimes - very hard, very strange, but so great ;-)
Books by T.C.Boyle - he's a great creator of words. You must find into his language, but then he's just great.
"Angela's Ashes" by Frank McCourt, the book where you won't really know if you should laugh ot cry and are doing both at the same time.

Are you looking for fiction or non-fiction?
If you like fiction with some sass, Sandra Dallas wrote "The Chili Queen" the main characters are far from typical and it provides a lot of humor in non-typical westerns and historical fiction.
Also if you like mysteries with humor Carl Hiaasen's books are quite popular and they have include an environmental theme.

Check out this new book "The Spellman Files" about a 27-year old woman from a family of private investigators who mostly spend time investigating each other's lives. It is funny in just the way you asked for. I'll link to some reader's reviews on Amazon.

Anything by Chuck Palahniuk. Some of his great ones are Invisible Monsters, Lullaby, and Survivor. He also wrote the now major motion picture Fight Club. His book are a little, for a lack of a better term "out there" and the humor is subtle, but it is definitely there. Quick reads and they leave you thinking. Enjoy!

You may like David Sedaris' stuff. Me Talk Pretty One Day is a good one, Dress Your Family is Courdory and Denim is another. They are all short stories. But he is funny as is his family. The stories are more essays of his life and his childhood. Very funny. From what you said you liked I think you would find him amusing. Him and his sister Amy are on Letterman a lot if that makes any difference.
