My 18-year-old is driving me crazy. He's almost out of school, he lives here for free, and all we want is for him to work after he gets out of school and start paying for the things we provide him now, such as his cell phone, his part of the car insurance, and maybe a little of the rent. Is that too much to ask?

I have two girls 31 and 32, BEEN THERE DONE THAT!!!!!!!!
Honey put your foot down and show no mercy, take away the pleasures and gifts and such until he shows more concern and respect. I was so firm with them and I pretended to not give a sh*t at times but then when I was alone I'd cry sometimes and pray about the situation but I never let them see me crack! LET HIM HAVE IT WITH BARRELS!

I would say that is not too much to ask. If he refuses, take away the cell phone and the car keys until he can pay. That will force him to get a job. Paying rent may be too far, mainly because that is a basic necessity. However make him pay for any extras.

Not to much to ask at all. When I was 18 I had to pay my parents rent and all my own bills.

He WILL start working or find himself on the street.

Mine is 14, still pretty grateful; the older two had jobs during high school and really were good, ambitious kids.

Good luck, dear.
