First: Good boots, not brand new ones and should be well broken in (used).
Clean Wool socks prefrably worn before, and not just bought, an old army trick is to turn the sock inside out and put soap on the heel area then turn it back so when put on your heel and the soap are in contact, helps prevent blisters, also apply a liberal dose of talcum powder into the toe area.
Carry a spare pair of socks in case you get your feet wet.
Depending on the terrain / area you will have to dress accordingly, carry a small ruck sack, with a waterproof jacket, and trousers, keeps you warm if it turns cold.
Hat to keep the sun off. Insect repelant cream.
Water always carry a bottle, chocolate or energy bars for nutrition. Small flashlight, Matches.
Shorts and t-shirt may be worn earlier in the day, but remember if you are going to be any length of time in the area, leading into dusk, the tempreture will drop and it will get cold.
Also make sure somebody in your group has a map, and a first aid kit, also always make sure somebody at home knows the particular area you will be traveling / walking in and the estimated time of your return.
Do not expect to find mobile phone coverage everywear
Remember to have have fun

It depends on where you are going.
Will you need to cross a river stepping into the water? Are the trails wet? Is it supposed to be e sunny day? Is it cold?
Anyway: SHOES are really important. DO NOT WEAR NEW boots or snickers - you will be greatful to wear a pair of shoes that already have your shape and do not hurt or cause blisters.
Attention to the socks: they should not have sewing junctures on the toe area (otherwise they might cause blisters) and should be soft. I usually take another pair with me in the backpack, so I can change if they got wet or are discomfortable.
Choose confortable trousers or shorts and always have something to protect you from windy areas - if you are climbing up a mountain there will surely be wind on the top and it could become really cold because of it.
I also recommend you to bring a swimming suit as underwear, so you can change clothes without discomfort or being ashamed - there must not necessarily be restrooms all over the trekking area.
There are many sport clothes with special fabrics that really dry fast and are comfortable. Look in a sports shop and ask the sales person for tips.
If possible, leave clean clothes and shoes and a sweater in the car for when you are back - you never know if you fell and got all dirty or if you had to cross a river and got wet.
USE SUNSCREEN! And lip balm. And maybe something to repel insects. A cap might be great (I personally hate them), and sunglasses.
In you backpack (a small one - less then 10l should do it for a day trip) you must have: water bottle, some salty snacks and candy bars, fruits, a photo camera, socks, sunscreen, insect repeller, a jacket/sweater or something against the wind. A small spotlight would be a great prevention, just in case you take longer to come back as you expected.

it really depends on the location of where you are hiking. we've gone hiking all over the place. if your going to be in a shaded area most of the time....wear shorts, maybe even pants, a tee-shirt, hiking boots/shoes, and a sweater (just in case it gets a little cold). oh, and don't forget to bring a bunch of water either! now, if you're going to be more out in the sun/open, you can probably just get away with shorts and a tee-shirt. when I say shorts, I mean hiking/work out shorts, not jeans. also, you'll want to check the weather too, and make sure it isn't and hasn't rained in the past couple of days. Otherwise, you could come home with mudd all over you.

Be on the lookout for poison oak and bring water, a hat, a GPS, and power bars. Pick a trail you have already been on and study a survival guide! Do not get lost or fall of a cliff.
