Brightening White Clothing
You should be able to restore dingy clothes to white (and not damage the fibres of the fabric) by soaking them them in lukewarm water and color safe or oxygen bleach for 24 hours, then rinse them with vinegar and water. Use one tablespoon of vinegar to one quart of water. Your clothes may be turning gray because you have hard water, and this diminishes the effectiveness of detergents, and often leaves a residue on clothing. If you think this is the case, you may want to add a powdered water softener to your wash, particularly when washing white clothes.:)

most of the time this happens when the clothes are not rinsed properly, I will tell you they way that I wash my whites, fill the washer with warm water add detergent, bleach and add the whites ,keep the lid of the washer up this way when the washing cycle ends the clothes can soak in the water for a good half hour, than lower the lid and rinse the clothes 2 times making sure that there is no suds left in them , hang them on the line or dry them in the drier , make sure that they are completely dry before putting them away to avoid rust stains. I have been doing laundry for many years and the whites are white until they fall apart. Edit if you are on a well the iron will turn all the things that you have in the house, yellow , for this use Iron Out ,

There are great bleach alternatives like Clorox 2 and Oxy Clean. I use both and they work great. I also use plain old hydrogen peroxide straight out of the bottle on tough stains, so you can use that to spot treat whites. All three of these products are available at grocery stores, Target, WalMart, KMart, etc. Good luck to you!

Another alternative would be to add borax to your laundry soap.
Personally I make my own laundry soap.
1cup borax
1 cup washing soda
1 bar of soap
5 gallon bucket
Shred bar soap in pan of hot water and heat until dissolved. Then add borax and washing soda. Stir until dissolved. Pour into bucket and add HOT water from tub until 3/4 full. Stir occasionally for 2 days until it gels up. It lasts my family of 5 for 3-4 months.
