its called the Gregorian calender (about 425 years old) and you had better watch out or the religious zealots will condemn you for saying the world is older than the bible says (only about 4000 years). You realize the Mayan calender is about 10,000 years,so it depends on what calender you are looking at (Chinese calender it is now the year 4704.) Take your pick

Because we only count the years from what is supposed to be the year Jesus Christ was born (although i believe that we have the date wrong). So everything BC (Before Christ) would include the billions of years since the earth was formed (i.e. 200 000 000 BC) and 0 - 2007 is AD (after Christ´s birth). AD stands for Anno Domini which means ´year of the Lord´. With year 0 being the year of Jesus´ birth.

Hope this clarifies things!

Because we cannot be sure 100% accurate of how old the earth is. A lot of the ways to calculate the age of the earth is quite accurate if counting a few hundred to thousands of years but when it comes to millions of years, it is based on theoretical calculations.
We also are counting from the time Jesus was born, hence the letters AD which stands for Anno Domini. So we are in the year 2007AD, or 2007 in the Year of Our Lord.

If we started counted at or birth of Jesus then we should start around 7 BC. This was the start of Great New Year. The first sign, or month, was Capricorn, as the Great Year is in reverse order. This is the reason why Jesus is called The Lamb Of God. Hence we should now be in year 2014.

Becasue it counts from the date that Jesus was born.

In some Asian countries, they count from the date that the Buhhda died - this year is 2550 ( you can see it in some Asian calendar)

Also, some countries count from a country era such as Japan - for example, Showa 15

It depends on each country....it doesn't mean the age of the earth!

The current western system for numbering the year started with the supposed date of the birth of Jesus. The letters AD standing for anno dommini (latin for Year of Our Lord) and BC standing for Before Christ. Different religions and cultures have different systems but I think you will find that they all have an important event as their reference point.
