So you can tell the difference between a man's shirt and a woman's shirt, then the dry cleaners know how much to charge since they charge more to clean the same shirt if the buttons are on the left.

Because way back when men dressed themselves and women usually had buttons in the back of their dresses....or (for the wealthy) had someone doing the buttoning for them. So the placement of a woman's buttons was for the convenience of her maid servant.
Most people are right handed so that dictated the side the buttons were on.

This is to differentiate what shirts are for men vs. women. But I say, what the hell, if it fits and looks good, then where whatever you want. One has to get REALLY close to notice which way your shirt is buttoned!

Woman's shirt is on different side, so that it's easier for man to un-button it. :-)

not only buttons but zippers zip the other side too. and i noticed my boyfriend puts his belt on the opposite way too, i tried to put it on him and he said i was "going the wrong way". that's strange.
