Too much water can be just as bad as not enough water. You can cause yourself all kinds of problems. Some plants can acutally drown from too much water. Them there is root rot, thats not going to help your plants either. And if by some miracle you do produce vegetable you have to worry about mildew causing them to rot. Water is good but there is also such thing as :"too much of a good thing".

You can cause root rot if you constantly overwater. Occasionally overwatering shouldn't be an issue. The soil will drain and will be fine.

Many plants do not tolerate "wet feet". This can cause root rot. Overwatering tomatoes in a hot climate can cause them to explode due to too much water.
