Webster's dictionary says: 1. a short ribbon or chain attached to a pocket watch 2. any ornament worn on such a chain, etc. The word has been around for a while and isn't about remote control electronic devices.

a fob isn't necessarily a remote door opener...

a fob is anything attached to the cars key ring that isn't a key

ie. a vw badge on a keyring is a fob...

exactly what it stands for though i do not know... if anything at all.
