I would like to transplant some wild pine trees into my yard (roughly 10' high, 4" diameter at base). Are these too mature to move without damaging roots beyond repair? If not what are some tips to help the trees take.

A local Christmas tree farmer friend of mine did an experiment 12 years ago to see if he could sell his trees that had gotten too big for the living room. He selected a dozen 10-12 ft. trees, a dozen 5-6 ft. and a dozen 5-6 ft. he had balled and burlaped the year before, all were Colorado spruce. Being friends he made me a very good deal to be part of the experiment. I received four of each. The larger four were dug with a large tree spade, the shorter ones were done with his smaller spade and the B&B's I dug by hand. One of my larger trees died the first summer and a second was winter killed. The rest are alive. The results are illuminating, after 6-7yrs. the smaller spaded trees surpassed the two larger ones in height. The B&B's look good but can't keep up to the smaller spaded trees. If I were to do it again I would tree spade 6-8 footers.

10' pine trees are not too big to transplant, depens on what kind of equipment you have to dig them up and move. They might prove to be too expensive to move. Don't know what your budget is.
