Waste of time
Comments: Wrong, wrong, wrong.
1. There was no nationwide "gas out" in 1997. There was one in 1999, but it didn't cause gas prices to drop 30 cents per gallon overnight. In fact, it didn't cause them to drop at all. Despite the popularity of the email campaign, the event itself attracted scant participation and was completely ineffectual.
2. There are over 205 million Internet users in the United States, far more than the 73 million claimed.
3. If, say, a hundred million drivers refused en masse to fill up their tanks on May 15, the total of what they didn't spend could amount to as much as $3 billion. However, it doesn't follow that such a boycott would actually decrease oil companies' revenues by that amount, given that the average sales of gasoline across the entire U.S. is under $1 billion per day in the first place.
4. Whether the total impact was a half-billion, 3 billion, or 10 billion dollars, the sales missed due to a one-day consumer boycott wouldn't hurt the oil companies one bit. Think about it. Every single American who doesn't buy gas on Tuesday is still going to have to fill up their tank on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, making up for Tuesday's losses. Sales for the whole week would be normal, or very close to it.
A meaningful boycott would entail participants actually consuming less fuel -- and doing so in a sustained, disciplined fashion over a defined period of time -- not just choosing to wait a day or two before filling up as usual

NO, it WILL NOT WORK. Sorry didn't mean to yell. This didn't work in 1997. Inevitibly the 14th or the 16 everybody will have to fill up. Making these highly profitable days for the gas companies. They KNOW you have to fill up some time, they're not concerned about one day. How many companies do you know that reconcile their books any more often then weekly or monthly?????? They won't even NOTICE that they had this crappy day until the end of the month.
If you really want to make a difference start carpooling!

Yes, it will work. You have to understand that the cost of living was lower then as well, so $2 was like $3 or $4 now.
Gas prices lowered within 48hours, and stayed lower for a long time.
No Gas on May 15th!

Had not heard a word about it but will give the information out. They say by summers end $4 a gallon. Good to mention it here may get someone like me to notice. good question.

Right now, for $3.90 I get 10 stamps that gets 10 pieces of mail where it needs to go and for $3.90 I get a gallon of gas that gets me nowhere + a little change back that gets me nothing. NOPE I won't be boycotting the stamp hike but YES I will be boycotting the gas hike!

It won't accomplish a darn thing. If you really want to make a statement to the oil suppliers, trade in or sell your monster SUV or pickup truck and buy a fuel efficient car.
Supply and demand. If supply is low and demand is high the price goes up.
