I actually am much more productive without it.When at home by myself a lot of times I'll turn TV off,no music nothing.Just do my chores, read, computer, work, etc.much more effective then when I'm listening to something or watching something else ,because I only have half my mind on what I'm doing.I can multi task .But I have found that I am putting out much more work this way.And accomplish a whole lot more. Then I watch TV,play music what ever. All the noise is a distraction.

I don't know if it's something we require, but it certainly does keep me from thinking! I can't think when there's too much going on around me (I guess I'm not one of those women who can multitask).
On a deeper level though, I guess that stuff (as well as other things) does prevent us from thinking about some of the bigger issues in life - TV and music, particularly, are sources/mediums of escapism from reality

No we don't need those things.. there's plenty else out there to keep us from thinking, not just noise. What about alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs which also mean that you don't have to think.
And computer games.
And TV.
And religion... don't get me started on religion.
So much of society is geared around providing wall to wall sensual input so that people don't have to think for themselves.

Noise helps, but I know some humans who have no trouble not thinking at times of perfect quiet or any time for that matter.

Well, I know people who do need this and people who don't. I don't need to make a judgement on any of them. It just is. If it bothers you, you need to move to the country and simplify your life.
