It's a constant loud hiss until I lift off the power, it doesn't fluctuate, just sounds like the hiss the type pump at a petrol station makes, but probably louder! I did notice in some of the paperwork with it ( i just got it last month) that the mechanic noted '(turbo end) minor exhaust gas leak' could that be related? As I said, I can only hear it when I'm accelerating hard. Unfortunately an auto so no boost guage to show pressure drop, but I thought it must be something to do with the turbo. Thanks for the help so far, much appreciated.

It's a Turbo, right?

You're probably are just hearing the turbo spooling up. As the car gets older the bearings in the turbo also get worn down. This can make the turbo hiss louder and also cause a little rattling sound.

Completely normal, especially for an older Saab like the 9000.

150K!!! Hell its merely getting broke in. certainly one of my purchasers is at 860K on the comparable engine and speedier. His secret, 3K oil differences, in no way overheated and popular maintenance. Now as to what your finding at. Have the compression checked. No interpreting under one hundred thirty# and optimum to lowest with 10% finished differential. Then have the save moist verify the compression. could bounce readings to a hundred and forty# plus. if so engine has not been overheated that shrinks Saab pistons rapid. next, while you're quite extreme approximately protecting this motor vehicle, have the save pull off the valve conceal. you're finding to locate a sparkling head internally, NO SLUDGE. If this seems good you likely have a powerful shot at protecting this motor vehicle for an prolonged time. One final element, if the motor vehicle is an computerized transmission, forget each and every thing I merely wrote. bypass ON IT, 9000 Saab computerized trannys are actually not good or time-honored for long existence. you do not choose the themes. in case you have the different questions merely drop me a notice. good good fortune

All your hearing is the blow off valve, since the Turbo deals with the exhaust all the pressure in the turbo when its running is releasing all the exhaust in it. thats why you hear the psssssss. I think its a pretty cool sound myself. I love turbo's in the morning. So everything is fine dont worry.

Could also be an air injection pump if your car is equipped with one...they usually have a diverter valve that diverts pressurized air to the atmosphere under certain conditions and it may be defective.

There is a "blowoff" valve on the turbocharger. Excess boost is diverted from the turbo to atmosphere. Sounds like this is what you are hearing.

I would check your vacuum hoses, especially the ones going to the PCV valve.
