An Astrologer constructs your birth chart, based on your birth information, for you and only you.
The birth chart or "natal" chart can then be analyzed and describes likely tendencies or experiences that you might encounter.
It is but a road map, it is up to you to make the choices that will determine your path in life. However, it does provide a good and accurate general description of the things that you are likely to encounter in life, both internally (personality) and externally (life-events).
Then there are other predictive techniques. Transits, Progressions, Solar Returns for events and periods throughout your life. Synastry and composite charts for relationship analyses.
It's truly amazing to me how many people who say there is nothing to it have never had their chart done. The best place for you to start is always to have your chart calculated. Any Astrologer could begin there and can explain things to you in more depth.
We have a saying: "the stars do not compel". They impel you with likely tendencies and experiences, but your future or destiny is not cast in stone, it is a live and living thing and every Astrologer will tell you that the existence of your own free will allows you to use whatever strengths and overcome any weaknesses shown in the birth/natal chart.

Certainly! Remember "the stars impel, they do not compel". You need a natal (birth) chart erected for your own particular time and place of birth, then you need a forecast given for what is happening in the heavens and affecting you now.
Try astro.com for a good chart and some forecasting. Astrology is extremely accurate (I know, I've been an astrologer for over 40 years) when the correct time of birth is given. Also, remember that you have free will in what you do with what you've been given: the stars indicate, and your job is to work with them, not sit there and be "star-struck"!

Vedic astrology is an ancient behavioral analysis and forecasting system. It employs a diagram of the positions of the planets relative to the earth and sky, based on the time and place of a person's birth. An astrologer reviews this chart to find information about an individual's concerns and about terrestrial events. The astrologer, depending on skill and clarity of consciousness, makes inferences regarding an individual's disposition and character and may foretell events in that person's life. Using advanced techniques, an astrologer may even forecast events on a community, national, or global scale.
What draws people to astrology through the ages, I believe, is the desire to make the right decisions. Plagued with poor decision-making capabilities, a person can retreat and inordinately reduce their expectations. Taking lower risks, they attain lower results, lower rewards, and basically, a life of diminished joy. Astrologers help their clients understand whether they are in a slump or a surge and what might be the anticipated duration of either one. Astrologers, as counselors, want to help lead their clients to positive outcomes and to help them build a psychology that naturally triggers life-supporting behaviors.
Ultimately, the best way to get out of trouble is not to get into trouble to start with. Patanjali, the author of the Yoga Sutras, offered a timely aphorism: "Avoid the danger which has not come yet:" Vedic astrology offers us a map to guide our life and gives us an analytical time profile of our behavior to help us understand what compels us to act. Vedic astrology helps us determine which behavioral traits to promote and which ones to target for self improvement.
As a final note, it is not Vedic astrology's purpose to replace an individual's responsibility to decide for themselves what is best. Astrology tells us about the absence or presence of certain tendencies. We may use this information as a tool to form our own decisions and take our own actions. Armed with that, we can move forward joyfully in our lives, anticipating the best and averting the rest.

There are good times and bad times when to do some thing.
For example: If you decide to take a trip to some where one-hundred miles away on specific date. You know it's going to cost money. So you check the chart on that date and you personal chart then compare. It shows you may be short of money. So what do you think?

I think it is a guide & would ask the other rather confused posters why they feel that something which is "nonsense" has lasted longer than most religions?... certainly longer than christianity & Islam.
You can do your own birth chart - check it out for free at www.astro.com.
However everybody has free will - never forget that...... you're in the driving seat & it's your life.....
