I think that every American med school requires the MCAT. I dont think they would have any interest in your GRE - that is a test for humanities students. They want to know specifically about your knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology - that's what the MCAT is for. Also, there has been pretty extensive research in this area, and it has shown that success on the MCAT is closely correlated with success in medical school. So the MCAT is likely to be even more important in the future than it is now.
Some medical schools accept as little as 1% of the applicants. You need to be a top student in every way to get into med school.
