I just bought a new dvd burner. I unplugged my old one and plugged my new one into the exact same slots. My computer doesnt recognise it and when i turn on my computer it says "sec slave drive - atapi incompatible"
Answers would be appreciated, regards Andrew

This error means (in a more-expanded form) that your (new) secondary slave drive plugged into the same slot needs to configured for ATAPI.

I do concur with the other answerers that yes, you should check your jumper pin settings at the back of your drive first as per the manufacturer settings. I do have other suggestions from experience.

My first suggestion is to make sure you are using the new 80-wire (still a 40-pin cable interface, just smoother, thinner with more wires). It is a very common mistake that original 40-wire/40-pin cables are used in an EIDE drive. I've seen this alot and usually putting the new 80-wire cable in and bingo-bongo, error gone.

If that doesn't work. I would also suggest double-checking you ATAPI settings in your boot BIOS. By entering your CMOS BIOS setup when your PC boots up (by pressing Del or F1 depending on your PC - try both if the F1 key or the Del key alert is not posted at the black boot screen) .

You can check the drive settings for your secondary slave. usually on the very first BIOS screen. If it's set to Auto you should be okay. It's it's set to something else, you may have to either reset it to Auto or try to set it to something comparable.

Note: Be aware that you are changing the settings on your secondary slave drive ONLY. It you adjust the settings for any of the other Primary or Secondary Master and/or Slave, you could be changing configuration of your hard drive and your system may not boot at all.

Don't worry, you won't fry your new drive or your system by trying different settings as long as you change just the Secondary Slave, you may just have boot issues as before.
It sounds like the drive preference is ATAPI, so look for a BIOS setting that allows either ATAPI, IDE or EIDE and try adjusting the settings there.

Hope this helps...

Try turning your computer off, unplugging it, and then remove and reset cables that connect to it at all points. Motherboard end and DVD burner end. Turn it back on and see what happens. It is also possible that the jumpers may be set incorrectly. If they seem to be set correctly, try changing the sec slave drive to the secondary master and change the other to secondary slave if you have 2 cd rom drives.
Note:-sec slave--Remove jumper and Sec master--set jumper

The old one you pulled out is connected and jumper set to slave drive. Your brand new DVD burner has its jumper as master. Follow the jumper setting guide and put the jumper on the pins designated for slave drive. That should put your PC back in business.

Did you set the jumper?
