You may have great musical appreciation but your singing may not be accurate. You might be singing slightly out of tune, out of time or that your diction needs to be improved. Perhaps that's what your pianist friend really means. Techniques to sing properly include breathing, articulating the lyrics, posture, hitting the notes correctly, etc.

To improve singing why not join choir groups, take up a night course on singing or your pianist friend can teach you to read music or sing in tune? Singing karaoke may help you sing in tune.

OR you can start off here with these free singing lessons:

The best option, if you can afford it, is to take up singing lessons. You can also take lessons online for a small fee e.g.

Follow your passion! Good luck.

You need some formal instruction in how to read music, and lots and lots of practice. And don't necessarily assume your friend is right, ask him or her to explain why you are a bad singer. Then go get a second opinion from a music or voice teacher. Singing is one of those things in which you are a bad judge of yourself, it matters how it sounds to other people. But anyone can improve, given proper training, especially if you like it and are motivated.

Who cares what other people think? If you have a passion for singing, SING! Maybe learn guitar or something to accompany yourself - it depends on your type of music. Don't worry about sight-reading - listen to songs and sing by ear. I've been doing it for more years than I care to remember.
Hope this helps.

well, if your friend said you're bad then you must be, give up now! Am I the only one who thinks that sounds wrong? who cares what other people think, if you believe you're good and you love to do it, do what you want, and don't let other people's oppinions of you sway you either way. and besides, last time i checked a B was good lol. Good luck, the only one who really knows if you're any good is you

If it is your passion, and it makes you happy, then it doesnt matter if you are good or if people think you are good.
My high school choir teacher used to tell me I wasnt good at it but he also said "dont sing cause you want to sing cause your soul has to!"

Go on American Idol and let Simon decide - and take his honest answer - because trust me he usually is honest, it just that people cannot take it.
