i have had emails which supposedly sound like they are from my contacts but u can spot them a mile off because i know the way ppl write so i can tell if an email is from a person i know.
golden rule: no one can pretend to be someone they are not and no one can hack into your contacts, for that they need your password, and incase u ever happen to get an email from someone that sounds like one of your friends, check with them before opening any attachments, when in doubt always check, beter to be safe than sorry

A name would help.
Are you sure that the email warning you about the virus isn't the one that actually has the virus?
If you use a web email service, this is not really possible. The web services have pretty strong virus protection and it's also hard to read your contact list without authorised access.
If you use an email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.), it's entirely possible.

Just delete it, the golden rule on emails, if you dont know the person, and you werent expecting them, delete them.
Most virus and hoax are pass through the internet millions of times a time, deleting them will help everyone else.
