I will be attending college this fall, and I think i heard this somewhere. Is it really true? I am a 19 year old boy from NY, and also, if this is true, why and how would I ever memorize my SS Number? My mom is the one who holds my ss card.

That's nuts. I have NEVER, NEVER written down my social security number on anything - except for credit apps, and then I am very, very careful. You may not have heard of Identity Theft, but giving out your SSAN to anyone who absolutely does not need it is how your identity gets stolen. An once the theives have it - you're toast. They can open all kinds of credit cards in your name, make false charges against these bogus charges, and most of the time - unless YOU know they have been doing this AND you tell the credit card companies, you can be legally charged for the bogus bills. It could even force you into bankruptcy and follow you all your life.

Sound pretty extreme? It is. But just ask people whose lives have been ruined by identity theft. They will tell you it is a horrible thing to go through. And all because the wrong person got their social security number.

Be very, very, careful about who gets to see your SS number. Certainly, never be so careless as to put it on a college assignment.

It would probably be illegal for a college to ask you to do this. But they might ask you to write down your student Identification number that was given to you by the college.

I think there is a bigger problem here. If you are getting stressed out by the idea of memorizing a SS number, that you are going to have a really big problem in college where you will have to memorize a LOT more than just a few numbers. Are you sure that college is the right thing for you? College courses are hard and they go by fast... you have to learn a lot in a short time. College is not for everyone.... Before you borrow many thousands of dollars that you will have to pay back, be sure that you really want to do this!

I've never had to put that number on my assignments, but at Cal State Long Beach where I attended, they used your Social Security number as your student number. It will be on your college ID card.

Doubt it. Normally the college would assign you an ID number, and most likely you would have to write that on your assignments (unless it's a very small school).
