A few points. People who set out to write "Best Sellers" usually fail. Don't set out to write a Best Seller -- set out to write the Best Book you can, and don't worry about numbers.
Also, by all means, write in Italian. You'll never be as comfortable or have as much command of language as you do with your mother tongue -- stay with it. Umberto Eco writes in Italian; and that hasn't stopped him from producing many works that have been translated into English to achieve Best Seller status and even successful Hollywood movies.
Scriva in italiano. Non farete un errore.

Well, more people speak english than italian. But I wouldn't worry about that at this stage. Get it written, published in italian, sell 100,000 copies, THEN get it translated. You have a long way to go.
BTW of every 4,000 books written, 1 is published (I'm not counting self-published). Of every 500 published, 1 is a best seller (ie more than 100,000 copies in the first year. Most sell less than 10,000 copies, which means about $5,000 to the author.
Good luck - but you'll need more than that!

Best sellers are produced into many languages- I think you should write your book in Italian. Let someone else worry about the translations. One of my favorite authors, Haruki Murakami, always writes his novels in Japanese, and he has two very good translators.

Write the book first in which ever language you write best in. Not physically best, but which one do you think in the most smoothly.
But in the end to be a best seller I think you'll have to print it in english.

Write it in Italian! It is your mother tongue and you surely master it better than English... There are translators that will translate it in English! Don't worry for that...

I agree with Jack; the only real reason for writing a (I hope for you :) bestseller (anyway, longseller are better...) straight in English is you really like to write in English; anyway, Joseph Conrad native language wasn't English, so who knows...? ^_^
