Well in the spirit of the classics (seeing as how you are just wrapping up 2001) I would recommend the big daddies of science fiction

Robert Heinlein
-The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
-Stranger in a Strange Land
-Starship Troopers

Grandmaster Heinlein has a talent for technical detail, without getting too bogged down in them as to become monotonous. Just as important to him is the human element of science fiction. He can make you care about his characters, and actually be interested in the technical doodads they happen to be dealing with.

Isaac Asimov
-The Foundation series
The Foundation
Foundation and Empire
Second Foundation
Foundation's edge
Foundation and Earth

-The Robot series
The Caves of Steel
The Naked Sun
The Robots of Dawn
Robots and Empire

What can be said about the man who transformed science fiction from the silly little genre about goofy robots, men in spandex, and scantily clad women, into a serious and well respected genre of writing?

Frank Herbert
-The Dune series
Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chapterhouse Dune

The Dune series will make you re-think your life. It eschews focusing on the gobbelygook about space ships and lasers and explores human interactions, from one on one relationships, to the relationship between a God-Emperor and the millions of planets under his control. Everything from politics, to technology, to religion, is covered in the Dune series.

EDIT: Figured that I should throw the individual books in the series to help you get started
