A standard exponential function has form y = ce^(kx). You can use it... well, whenever you have an exponential function. (For instance, if you're told that dy/dx is proportional to y, or if you're told directly that y is exponential, or if you're told that for every change of a certain amount in x, y changes by a certain factor or the logarithm of y changes by a certain amount...)
