I don't know and (unless I'm very wrong) nobody else here does, either. One thing I DO know for sure is that I would hate to be in the parents' position now. If they are completely innocent then imagine how they must be feeling... knowing that they left her and that this happened as a result of their negligence. I can't imagine living with that.
As someone said earlier: these parents made a mistake and they are indeed paying the highest price for it. They did a stupid thing and are now suffering like hell. I wouldn't wish this situation on my worst enemy.

I think the family were most definately watched and as I've said before I don't think that this was the first time the children were left alone. This is probably why the parents felt comfortable dining away from them. However, I would have thought that the Portuguese police will have questioned them and the friends they were dining with. Saying that, when I watched the press conference that Kate McCann gave I couldn't help feeling that there was something not right. My husbands reasoning in that was that shock affects everyone differently. Maybe they are innocent of not being involved in the abduction but as far as I'm concerned they do hold some of the blame as they left the children alone in an apartment in a foreign country.
Again Ceasar the children were not in a safe place!! They were away from their parents. A safe place would have been with their parents. Again you use the girl who was snatched from her bath, and I am in no way blaming the mother on that one, but the back door was unlocked. Again had the door been locked would the abductor have gotten in? Had Maddies parents been sat on the balcony would the "abductor" have broken in with them in such close proximatey? It about taking calculated risks as a parent such as nipping to the toilet whilst they are playing in the front room. Not putting your children to bed and disappearing for a meal only returning every half hour to check on them!!

Any parent/parents that leave small children unattended anywhere, in this day and age ,is worth giving a closer look at ..especially if something has happens to one or all .....the only people who would defend this kind of action is those who would do like wise....so ,those that might be "pissed off" that these parents are looked at in this horrid situations...isn't worth concerning yourself over....Madeleine's parents,at the very least are guilty of negligence and by leaving their children unattended they placed them in harms way.....which could be considered child endangerment.....they should be looked at .... questioned.. and the sympathy can wait until whether it is determined that their actions involved no more than negligence and stupidity.....
I don't know what has happened to this little girl...I only hope that she is alive , well ,and will appear before to long......but the truth is ...these parents did do wrong,to what extent is unknown.... leaving children unattended ..is just something that should not ever be done..(and no ..not all parents do this)..... there is no excuse for this behavior.......and I don't know why anyone would try and excuse it to begin with...a parents responsibility is 100% to the care and wellbeing of their children..from the moment a child is brought into this world and until they are grown....this is not an opinion but a fact.......and for those who would argue otherwise...please do not have children..your priorities are all screwed up....

The parents have been drilled for hours on end by the police, and the police are confident that they have nothing to do with it. Just because they're not breaking down on camera doesn't mean they're not heartbroken, everyone expresses their grief in different ways. The mother has been seen praying in a chapel every day clutching her daughter's soft toy. The only thing the parents did wrong was leaving their kids alone, which was a truly awful thing to do. But God love them, they've learned their lesson in the worst possible way. I can't imagine any amount of people telling them how wrong it was to leave them alone will do any difference now, they know how wrong it was to do it and I'm sure it's tearing them up inside. I don't think they had anything to do with their disappearence, I think they must be going through hell and hating themselves for leaving their kids alone.

I know most parents would not leave their kids alone but we can not judge others as we do not know that full story. Plenty of people also leave their kids and it is a very common thing to come across. I am sure they are suffering enough as it is without us telling each other that what they did was wrong! I do not believe there is anything suspicious about the parents at all. They left their kids alone in what was "sold" as a safe holiday resort. Their judgement may have been misguided but to conclude that they have anything to do with this is a little far fetched. They are in pieces and all that matters now is that the little girl is found safe and well.

OK, my turn, to stick my unqualified nose in. Your gut feeling is based on little evidence. These parents made a mistake and are paying the highest price for it. Let's not beat them up over it. If they seem different to parents of other abducted children making appeals etc, it's because they are different. Usually this happens to people from less favourable social backgrounds. And because of the type of people they are the media have not mentioned this as negligent behaviour, but sooner or later someone will. As for their current attitude, doctors are used to handling stress, and controlling their emotions. That said, it is unfair to say they seem unmoved.
Personally I wouldn't leave my kids either, and in similar situations in the past, I tucked them up in the hotel then ordered room service. I'd rather eat a boring room service menu than leave them alone. They must feel terrible, and wish they had been over-protective like the rest of us.
I suppose a couple of doctors don't get much time to have relaxing hols, and they were trying to get the both of best worlds. Some scumbag has been scouting for opportunity and has seized on this one, having spotted their dining pattern.
Please don't give these people a rough time, they are suffering enough as it is.

I personally don't think it's anything to do with the parents, however it's all very well to say you were checking on them every half hour, but as they've found out, alot can happen in half an hour and I'm sure they'll never forgive themselves. I have young children and would never leave them asleep in a room by themselves for 15 mins let alone half an hour, the thought of them waking up and crying for me for half an hour makes me feel sick. I just hope that Maddy is safely returned and we should all be praying for her.

i think its terrible that the disgusting behaviour of two so called upper class parents is being swept aside. even maddys grandparents are saying they are a loving mum and dad and adore their kids. maybe so, but if my daughter ever left her kids alone....and i know she would never.....then the last thing i would be doing is sticking up for her....she would get a tongue lashing from me for a start.
yes i know they must be devastated but deep down they know they are to blame.
like said before if this were a poor back street couple or a single parent the press would be slating them
their gorgeous daughter is missing, and i hope to hell it isnt to a paedophile.
if she is never going to be found, then better to be taken by someone who cant have kids and will shower her with love and never leave her alone.
that maybe sounds cruel and i hope she is found alive and well and returned, but anything is better than being in the hands of a rotten, stinking, lowlife paedophile..... and i bet Gary Glitter and his kind are enjoying every minute of this.
those parents should be prosecuted and charged with negligence and struck off the medical register.
what are their twins and maddy if she is found going to think when they are adults and read what their parents did?

Only her parents may know the full story as with journalisim everything is manipulated and contrived!Maybe they had gone out for dinner that night and 3 other nights but seemingly they were at a child friendly complex which they would have paid way over the odds for in the hope it was safer for their children. Who are we to judge them? Do you not think they are suffering enough? As with every unfortunate case of a child being abducted or killed, who does everyone point the finger at first? ...the parents and in most cases they are completely unjustified! i.e they have only just found out the killer of the little pagent girl in America and for years her parents got blamed. Look at the case of the british couple being blamed for the deaths of 3 children and it was cot deaths! It is hard enough being a parent without everyone else giving their tuppence worth and normally the people who think they know best don't have any children...do you? !

I totally agree with everything you have said, but we need to start offering our support to the parents, in the hope of finding maddy. They obviosuly didnt realise how naive and stupid it was to leave their kids on their own.
The case seems to taking a long time and there is still no sighting on her whatsoever. I think the police have been slow on the uptake. They need to start putting things into practice immediately, checking all possible exit points and doing border patrol.
Whoever has maddy could be out of the country by now. Tey could be in spain or across seas? Who knows where the hell she is now. They need to start stepping up a gear, getting outside help.
I think the two UK criminologists should have been sent out earlier, there has been no news on forensic evidence so far.
They say they are trying to deal with it to the best of their ability but they clearly need more help. Why cant the UK police get over and be sent over to look for her.
