The term feminist refers to the movement of women seeking equal rights in all aspects of society, without discrimination based upon their gender.

Sadly, however, there are many women who use the term to justify their aggressive behavior in their pursuit of what they deem to be equality. They persecute and villify men, and are filled with a sense of entitlement simply because they are women. All human beings must work for what they achieve...and blaming inequality and gender discrimination for their failures gives feminism a very bad name...

A feminist is a woman who believes that women should have equal rights to men. They do not hate men nor wish for superiority. They believe that women should be allowed choices. This means if they choose to stay home they can and if they want careers this is acceptable as well. Women are no longer forced into behaving a certain way that is acceptable by the dominant group.
Feminism is a diverse collection of social theories, political movements, and moral philosophies, largely motivated by or concerning the experiences of women, especially in terms of their social, political, and economic situation. As a social movement, feminism largely focuses on limiting or eradicating gender inequality and promoting women's rights, interests, and issues in society.

I just wanted to point out that being a feminist has nothing to do with your gender. Man, woman, or however you define yourself, being a feminist is a much more powerful movement than "wanting the best for women".

Feminism is about equality, empowerment, and community.

A woman who wants men and women to be completely the same (which goes a tad further than equal), even if the men and women involved don't really want this.
A feminist is happy when boys play with dolls and girls play with cars, even though they might prefer other toys.
A feminist does not care about what people want, her only concern is that women must have everything that men have - and then a little extra to compensate for millenia of repression.

The "original" definition of feminism was to empower women so that they would be considered equals in a male dominated world. Perhaps that was the wrong word at the time...

The word is currently used to describe the empowerment of women - either through proving their superiority to men, or by bringing men down to their level (and perferrably a couple of levels below that).

I think that is why the Equal Rights movement is now considered seperate from the Feminist movement.
