For a cup of coffee in the cafe or watching a movie together with students.

Should it be encouraged to foster a closer relationship between a teacher and his/her students or does it backfire in the sense that the students get too close to you and will not listen to you in class?

Are you insane? All it takes is an accusation in today's climate to destroy you! No proof is needed. Once the accusation is made it will be with you forever.

Go to school sporting events, band concerts, plays, and other school events if you want to hang out with the kids, but never in another setting.

A teacher in our district had kids over to his house to watch a movie related to what they were covering in class. One idiot, brought a pop with rum in it unbeknown to the teacher. The word spread throughout the high school that kids were drinking alcohol at his home. It made the papers and the school board was forced to act. The pressure was so intense that he resigned and moved out of state. BEWARE!!!

Going out once in a long while is okay. It is okay to go to the movies or barbeque when the vacation is here. It is a good way to foster closer relations. Just remain a teacher and treat them like your students.

Risky, especially if the teacher is a man and the students are girls.
The teacher has a right to have a life apart from School and will be a better teacher if he does have a life.

I do hang out with my kids after school. Very often, I find that such interactions will help me in understanding their behaviour in school (broken families etc). Although I am close to my students, I send clear messages that I am their teacher. THis I feel has not backfired and they tend to respect and listen to me in class

We used to call that "field trips" if there was a defintie purpose to the outing. Otherwise, No, not in my opinion either.

If the activity is just for social interaction, teachers should not hang with the students.

I'm not a teacher, but I think teachers shouldn't hang out with students at all - it's inappropriate in my opinion.
