It is because Giambi lets the media into his life in a way Bonds would never do. That is why the media bashes Bonds while leaving Giambi off limits. Not defending either player, but look at it. As long as Jason keeps giving interviews, they aren't going to print anything that paints him in bad light. If you are looking at New York media, take A Rod when he was in his 'slump' last year, where he batted .290, hit 35 HR, had 121 RBIs, scored 113 runs and stole 15 bases. What he did wrong was to shut out the media. Thus they painted the picture of a guy who could not hit the ball.

Because Giambi still helps the Yankees with his undetectable HGH, the media is laying off of him. If he were hitting .190 with no homers, they would be all over him.
As long as he continues to hit, they'll leave him alone.

Giambi never specified what his apology was for or about.
But, y'know, these days that's more than enough to win a Medal Of Freedom.
