There are no houses across the street from my house, just a big open field. Every winter, when the grass dries out, the neighbourhood kids set fire to the field. As a result, we often have field-mice taking refuge in our garage, and sometimes they get into the house.
Inhumane as it may be, rat poison is the only thing that gets rid of them.

lol.. yes..I live in the country and occasionally one will get in the house.. I trap them or in one novel moment I whacked one with my shoe while the cats looked on with interest.

yea i did once....i dunno how it got in but it sure did...that sneaky little thing irritated my dog to the limit...he went under such low drawers, where my dogs paws couldnt even reach...it was funny seeing my dog running around lik that.....but we had to put a stop to it coz we noticed he was nibbling away wires and plastics and god-knows-what...
