A standard technical knife- sometimes called "Stanley" from the company who started making them. Its the type with an extendable blade that can be snapped off. That way you always have a sharp blade.
There are several types available, so best go shopping in a tool store or a "home improvement" warehouse. They are used to cutting carpets and plaster board, so they will handle cardboard easilly. Just pick one that fits your hand well. Make sure the handle will not slip in your hand- these things are SHARP!

I would suggest taking the biggest model that you can handle- the blade is thicker and will not break easilly by accident. Also make sure that the place where the blade meets the handle is made of metal (steel) or the whole knife handle is metal. the plastic only types break real fast.

Get some extra blades too and have someone show you how to change them.

There are also other knives- with small blades of various shapes- more like surgical lancets than tools. if the "home improvement" does not have them, then an art supply shop will
