Why do we give XXX-XXXX-XXXX? Why don't we just give out our credit card numbers, while we're at it?

I don't use my real name because I have had men stock me in the past. One man us to follow me home from work to try and find out where I lived. He us to wear a wig and drive different cars. Another us to follow me home from school and ask my friends my name. Scary! You can't trust all people because you don't know what every ones intentions are. For women I think they don't want men to find out there identity to decrees there possibility of being raped. In the field I work in I just need some ones first and last name and middle name would help to find out where they are currently employed, where they live now, where they have lived for the past 10 years, what mailing address they use, if they have a misdemeanor or felony, how many cars they own and so on. So not many people want just anyone like me knowing that type of information so using a nick name is a source of protection. I wish this world was a more innocent loving place but it is not and some people have a sick drive to hurt other people in any way possible. Other people don't think of any thing I just mentioned and just like being called different names that their friends or family made up for them. Or a name that they wished that they had. I am sure there are other reasons but this is mine.

Well theres at least two reasons for this; one as already is mentioned is privacy the other is a way of establishing a special friendship with someone encouraging an exclusivity with that person that not everyone can have, despite seeing some people try. People like to be seen having good relationships or chummy mateship with people on the net it can make them feel good, powerful and loved.

Because we do not want to expose ourselves. If we used our real identity, people would not be so obscene or give really thumbs down advice...but then others will not want to express their feelings fully because they wouldn't want people to know what they are going through. I prefer to use a nickname because I can express as much as I want without worrying that someone I know will find out and spread the news. If you want to use your real name...you can use it as your nickname...but I am sure you also prefer using an Alias.

I don't know. If your mom wanted you to be called Steve-o, she'd named you that, right? Bob for Robert. Why not just name him Bob?
It kinda bugs me when people say, "we're gonna name him John Thomas, but everyone will call him J. T."
Or "Riley but Ri" for short.

Because my avatar is a real character from a British TV show...and his name is George.
I see your point, my 360 isn't about George, though.
