Computers are devices to perform calculations. These calculations are done according to guidelines called 'programs". The results of these calculations are displayed in form of text, graphics, or sound.

In the beginning computers were based on tubes filled with air, but in due course these were replaced by transistors. Both the size and the cost of computers reduced as a result.
