I feel it is to apply the golden rule to everyone you come in contact with...
"Do unto others the way you would have them do unto you"...
Meaning treat others the way you want to be treated, with kindness and respect...
That is just basically being polite...

To do what is polite is etiquette. Normal behavior is do what you want. There isn't a lot of proper etiquette so I guess normal is the new way.
