The water has an unique feature as a liquid. Its density rises between 0°C and 4°C. So the volume of a given volume of liquid decreases between 0 and 4°C and the volumetric coefficient is negative.
This is due to a special type of bound called the hydrogen bound . It is a strong electrostatic interaction between Oxygen of a given molecule of water and hydrogen of a neighboring molecule. A molecule of water has 4 hydrogen bounds .
