If you are looking at your organization as a group of actors that may collectively acheive more than would be possible if each worked on their own, such as what Oliver Williamson describes in his transaction cost economics, you would want to minimize self interested behavior. Some people believe that this must be done by control (example agency theory: Jensen and Meckiling are some of the first proponents).
More interesting is the notion that if you compensate people and satisfy their legitimate economics interests, and avoid putting them in tournaments (where they are rank ordered against each other which destroys any initiative to cooperate) you will outperform organizations which don't do this. Given that most firms default to theory X management (believing that management's role is to light a fire under unmotivated employees), promoting group reinforcements would seem to lead to a competitive advantage since it would differentiate your firm from the rest. At the very least, avoid pitting employees against each other whenver possible.
