I want to change my name legally, but I heard that you can only do this once in your lifetime. Does anyone know if this includes or excludes marriage?

Many Thanks in Adv.,
Melz

In Pennsylvania if you have been divorced, the procedure is simple and just involves the filing of some papers using the caption of the divorce action.

In cases other than divorce, you may be required to give public notice in the form of legal advertisements in a newspaper of general circulation in the county of residence, etc., depending on both state law and local rules of court.

Check the law of the state or province where you live.

Change of a complete name is a special proceedings in court and it is costly. If the change is only for typographical errors, the change could be made in the office of the Civil Reigstry and the cost is only minimal.

You can change your name every week if you feel like it, as long as it is not to defraud anyone.
