Please give more than an estimate if you can. Also, I was told by mapquest and another Yahoo "answerer" that I must travel through Tennesee and Texas but those states have been hit with major storms/floods. So can you please give an alternate route. Thank you

This won't give you an exact cost, but it gives a pretty good average based on specific cities and type of cars.

For a 2004 Beetle it gave the milage at 2655, 91.55 gallons used. With an estimated cost of $298.78 for a 1 way trip.

If your car is in perfect condition you might get a few more miles per gallon, if it is not in perfect condition you might loose a few miles per gallon. So just make sure that you have the maintenance up to date and keep an eye making sure your tires have the correct pressure as you are traveling.

From DC take I-95 to Richmond then I-85 down to Raleigh. Get on I-40 and take it all the way to Flagstaff, drop down to Mesa on I-17 and catch I-8 all the way into San Diego.

Very rough figuring.....3,000 miles at $3.50 a gallon (just to be safe) and 30 miles per gallon comes out to $350. (It should actually turn out less.)

Another alternate would be to take I-270 out of DC up north to I-70. Take I-70 all the way into Southwest Utah, then I-15 through Las Vegas and into Los Angeles, then I-5 into San Diego.

I've done it both ways. I like I-40 better.

If you travel 3,000 miles and get 30 miles per gallon that would be 100 gallons of gas, times (current rate) $3.29 per gallon = $329.00

It runs about $3.50 per gallon in California. Probably higher in the desert.

Probably about $250. Not including hotels, cost of food, etc.
