It's the atom. When you divide an atom (of any element) and separate the parts, you'll have protons, electrons and neutrons, and maybe positrons and quarks. But none of these particles have the whole properties of the element. Furthermore, when you take away one or more of these particles of the atom of a given element, you transform it in an ion, an isotope or in another atom, with other properties.

The answers is an atom. The characteristics of the element is still featured in the specific atom. For instance one atom of Oxygen will react in the same way as a thousand pounds of oxygen. Once you start breaking down the atom it begins to react or become another element of smaller proportions or it become single protons neutrons and energy

An atom is the answer to your question.
A molecule is, by comparison, made up of 2 or more atoms...example, a molecule of water contains 2 atoms of hydrogen and 1 of oxygen (hence the term "H20" referring to water)
I answered you longer than I probably "needed" to...in case you may have been confused between what an atom and a molecule is.
