The doppler effect is the lengthening or shortening of the wavelength of light or sound caused by the motion of the source relative to the observer.

Stars are (generally) moving away from us so the light gets shifted to a longer frequency. This is called red shift.

The pitch of a sound source on an object passing you is higher than if the source was stationary as it approaches and drops after it passes you. Pitch is related to wavelength.

Doppler is the name of effect. It's called Doppler's effect and it occurs when source of sound wave moving toward you or away from you and make voice become higher in pitch (toward) or lower in pitch (away)
