I have pretty much left this site but this is a very common question.
What MAKES a person a "Gypsy" is our genetics. We are not a lifestyle, we are a genetic people. It is carried on our genone itself.

A few are descended from Romanies who settled here, but most of them are not 'Gypsies' in the true, traditional Romany sense, but Irish Travellers {who are now recognised as an ethnic minority in their own right}. Interesting, how so many 'Travellers' are happy to set up permanent, *static* home on illegal sites...

The Rom are a race of people. They travel... From where, originally is a bit of a conundrum. The best bet at the moment is that they are from part of a fighting class of soldiers which was traveling through a portion of India centuries ago. The Rom have their own language and culture.
