Vectors obey the same rules as ordinary numbers.
Assume all the following letters are vectors:-
Let a = (2 5) and b = (3 7)
a + b = (5 12)
a - b = (-1 -2)

Vectors are added and subtracted piecewise. Give two vecotrs of equal dimension (2 dimensional plane, 3 dimensional plane, ect) you simply add their coordinates. For example, give vectors a=(2,3,4) b=(6,7,8) a+b=(2+6,3+7,4+8)=(8,10,12). Likewise, subtraction follows that a-b=(2-6,3-7,4-8)=(-4,-4,-4).

This is more for math, if you're looking for a physics answer you'll need to find a physics person.
