Marine as water covers the majority of the earth's surface.

Could be taken several ways.

There is more ocean than any area of land, by quite a bit. But most of the ocean is uninhabited. Life lives primarily near the surface.

Most ocean life depends on sunlight. Plants live near the surface and depend on sunlight for photosynthesis. Most of the ocean life either eats plants or hunts that which eats plants. Coral reefs teem with life. But coral needs water at certain temperatures and that means shallow tropical waters.

Away from the shorelines and the banks, most of the ocean is like a desert. There are scavengers on the ocean floor that catch what settles down dead, and tubeworms that live near volcanic vents, but it is mostly an empty and barren world.

On the other hand, there is no such thing as a lifeless grassland or rain forest.

But the answer that the teacher is looking for is probably "marine."
