Rosalind Franklin was the female scientist who generated the X-ray scatter data which allowed Watson and Crick to figure out the structure of DNA. Some say the data was stolen by Watson and Crick, and that she should have had a share in their Nobel prize, but in reality she could not win the prize as she had died from cancer (winners have to be alive at the time of awarding). She was 37 when she died of cancer, and it was likely her prolonged exposure to X-rays which caused her to develop cancer in the first place. She died in the pursuit of science.

What about Marie Currie?

She wasn't a biologist, but more of a chemist and physicist, but radioactive labeling has many important uses in studying biology.
