Probably the compressor. It usually costs about $300 for the part plus another $200+ for labor. Had to have a couple replaced in the past.

Most likely a coolant leak. There is a pressure switch on the system that disables the compressor if the coolant pressure falls below a certain level. This is to prevent damage to the compressor as there is also lubricant in the coolant. If the compressor turns and one of the coolant lines is cold, it could be a controls problem. Under the dash there is a series of valves in the ducting to direct airflow in the system. These are usually vacuum operated. If there is a vacuum leak to the controls or a failure in the controller, the correct valves will not open or close to direct cold air into your vehicle. Either of these failures could happen suddenly. But a slow coolant leak will cause the compressor to cycle on and off. If you heard this lately, you most likely have a coolant leak.

The very common reason for A/C not working is the loss of refrigerant gas. It might be due to some leak in the ducts through which these gases flow. Also might be due to the Condenser malfunctioning.
So while repairing the A/C system always make sure there is no leak anywhere in the system.

Depends on what's happening with it. It could be low on refrigerant, or the belt could be slipping, or the fuse might need replacement.

Any of these things could cause the A/C to quit.

Loss of freon, for the most common problem. Many other things can play into it, but no freon is tops.
