~By boat - didn't have trans-Atlantic planes in '17. But the troops walked in or rode trucks after they docked. And with great trepidation, but, since the war would be decided by the side the US took, with a good deal of optimism as to how the spoils would be divided.

Why the United States Entered World War I
The US entered the war for a variety of reasons. Here are some summaries of explanations given by FAQ Farmers.
Submarine Warfare and the Lusitania
There were unauthorized German submarines along the US East coast. Germany's resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare in the spring of 1917 provided the final straw for US politicians, and America declared war.
The first and foremost answer would be the sinking of the Lusitania, an British cruise/transport ship, bound for Britain from New York. The German U-boat ring sought to sink all supply ships headed for Britain in order to starve the island. It sank the Lusitania as part of its efforts. 1195 people died, including 128 Americans.
The Lusitania's sinking was the biggest influence on the American decision to enter the war. German submarine warfare (the Lusitania is included in this) sunk many ships over several years.
Had it not been for the Lusitania, the US would have stayed out of the War

Because of the sinking of the Luisitania and the Germans renewing after stopping for a time their unconditional submarine warfare and possibly the Zimmerman note , whether it was a forgery or not, the United States entered World War I on April 6, 1917.

The long answer: I'm not even gonna go there. It takes at least an hour to properly explain.
The short answer: Germany sunk one of our ships called the Lusitannia. It was accidental but newspaper publisher like Hearst used what was called "yellow journalism" to drum up American fears about the war.
The president, Woodrow Wilson, was like Bush in that he "wanted to keep the world safe for democracy." Eventually, the sinking of the Lusitannia by the German Submarine and a letter intercepted from the Germans in Mexico known as the Zimmerman Telegram (telegrams are possibly the worst things forever...there are at least six that have directly led to war) that declared German support for Pancho Villa's cause.
Wilson thought that the Germans were getting all up in our grill too much and finally mustered the support to go to war.
All we did was just kill people and gain like three inches of land and when Germany finally ran out of ammunition and will they and Austria (who started the war) surrendered. France was being France as usual (it is a great country though but in wartime they can be as vicious as anyone else, so can Americans) and wanted to suck the like out of Germany and so they basically ****** their economy...letting a little man named Hitler come into power.
The answer could be way longer but like I said, books have been written about this by less lazy people.
