next year i planning a Holiday to California whats the best way of getting around?

i was thinking of starting off in san francisco driving to los angeles then going across to los vagas and to the Grand Canyon, should i rent a car and stay in motels or rent a rv and stay in camp sites? i think what scary is driving a rv as thay are quite big. but i like to prove it myself that i can do it. i would like to see more of the country as well as the cites. do any one think it would be a cool hoilday or am i be total mad. i would be flying out from shannon. thanks

except you'd probably have a real hard time driving a big RV in san franscisco.
maybe with the money you save on hotels you can rent cars when you're in san fransisco and los angeles. las vegas and the grand canyon shouldn't be a problem.

Most RV parks can accommodate any size RV from a luxury motor coach to a towable pop-up camper. And the California, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, etc. areas all have several conveniently located RV parks.

You will probably find that it is cheaper to hire a car and stay in hotels than hire an RV. Gives you access to the hotel pools as well.

The following route might work better for you:

SF then down the coast to Santa Cruz and then along the Big Sur coast (nice but over-hyped - the coast of Devon and Cornwall in far more scenic!) or inland via Salinas (especially if you're into John Steinbeck), then across to Death Valley (couple of days if you detour to the Giant Redwoods), then Las Vegas, then down via Hoover Dam to Grand Canyon, and then back to LA.

You can get day trip flights from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon (which will effectively save you two driving days).

I noticed that you did not say what time of year you are planning to take this trip. You have also not mentioned whether cost is a factor. I mention the time of year because camping in a tent might be rather uncomfortable in Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon areas in the summer but delightful in the late fall or early spring. The US train system is not nearly as developed as the European one, but there are some programs for tourists to keep the costs down similar to EurRail passes. You might consider that and just rent cars for short times in cities where you are staying longer if good public transportation is not available to the sites you wish to visit.
