Why would two person communication with eachother by paper and pen?

Today I was in restaturant, I notice a guy and girl never say a word. They just write on note pad back and forth. Why would people communication that way?

Maybe one of them was deaf and the other didn't know sign language. There for making pen and paper very crucial for communication!!

You know there's really nothng vile about using paper and pen. It's not illegal. Wouldn't it be weirder if they each had a computer and communicated by typing?
