I have read both, but remember reading most recently that the oldest remains were found in Ethiopia, but I don't remember in which book I read it... I am curious to the opinions of those that have researched archeology...

If you read some of the books that have been written by those who have been tracing the history of man by collecting and cataloging DNA samples taken from people all over the earth the picture that emerges seems to be this.
That 50,000 years or so ago, mankind started spreading out all over the earth from a location in Eastern Africa, probably around where modern Ethiopia is located now. Mankind followed the coastlines into and thru Arabia, India, Australia, (connected by a land bridge from India, thru Sumatra, etc.)Asia, China, and Europe, and that the Asian branches came across the frozen Bering Strait to Alaska, Canada and the Americas, and went all the way south thru Mexico and on to the tip of South America.
That there are tribes in Western Africa that did not stray as far and pretty much stayed in that area, which would probably correspond to the location of Kenya. These tribes are suspected of having histories that go back as far as 150,000 years.

Check out some these books that trace mankind via DNA such as "The Journey of Man," by Spencer Wells.
