The lyrics and the melody for me. I love both. If there isnt a lot of both in the song, then I DONT want to hear it.

The music. Some songs have very good lyrics, & those lyrics may be important to that song, because they are what made that song a classic, but for songs in general the lyrics are only necessary to give the singer some words to use when vocalizing.

I notice that if a song have good beats that the lyrics are sometime over look. I have found myself loving a song just listen to the beats and hooks, and then one day I listen the lyrics got turn off with the same song I was loving few days ago. So it can be a great song but with some of the most childish lyrics

I love music more than I love poems and literature. Good words can give music more meaning but the sounds and notes are more important.
A song could have the deepest lyrics on the planet but if they have crappy music with them, I can't listen to it. To contrast, if a song has crappy lyrics but beautiful music, I can still listen and enjoy the music.
Half the time, I don't even hear or understand the lyrics of a song. I just like the singing because it gives me something to sing along with and I love a good voice singing a good melody.

It takes both to make a really good song, but for me the lyrics can be less than perfect if the music is right.

That is a good question...I would honestly have to say both because the music is what changes my mood and gets me into the song and the lyrics is what helps me relate to the song.

They both are pretty important! No one wants crummy lyrics, however, people would not want terrible music either! So, its hard to tell! I would think the music because with a catchy beat, and great music the song would probably sell more!

I think a song needs good music in order to be a hit. if it isn't catchy it doesn't do as well from a commercial standpoint. Lyrics do matter though. But I feel like fewer people go "wow did you hear that new song by ____...the lyrics are awesome!"

Personally, I'm more of a music person. The lyrics don't have to be great as long as it's a good song.

The lyrics. A good song with bad or meaningless lyrics are turn offs for me.
