Do you think we've become complacent as a society?

What injustice would it take for you to stand up for yourself?

Very few do. I am one of them. Raised in the 60's by a grandmother who was standing outside the White House protesting the night Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed, I was always taught that if you arent a part of the solution, you are part of the problem. I am a frequent writer to the president, my senator, congresswoman etc. As well as a demonstrator when the need arises. Right now, any American should have a cause to stand up for.

You should read a very interesting short story that relates directly to your question. It's called The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula Le Guin. You can find the text online. I am proud to say, I am one who would walk away. Pax - C

America is full of cliques, therefore sectarian and by far not united in common matters.

I've had to stand up for myself due to racial, religious, and intellectual prejudice, along with the exploitation of workers, innocent Americans, and the horrible onslaught brought by illegal immigration. Sometimes I think the methods of Stalin would help us with that predicament, should deportation fail to work.

My beliefs have changed many times over several decades.

Standing for one's beliefs or convictions also assumes that people don't change over time. All things are impermanent. It is actually the rigid and inflexible who could be seen as standing for their beliefs. However, standing for our beliefs is heralded in our culture. Quite the dilemma.

However, I would say 10% of the population talks the talk and walks the walk.

Yes we have become very complacent! Thanks to a lot of foreign influences as well...

I will stand up for things I believe in, equal rights for women, environment issues, world peace.

The most important thing is to figure out what to belive in. Most people believe in wrong things that were taught to them by their stupid parents. For example, people believe in God (who doesn't exist) simply because their parents did. What I am trying to say is that not every belief deserves to be fought for. Some beliefs are actually harmful to soceity, for example homophobia.

about 10% because it's so much easier to follow the crowd. most of the time if u call them on it, they won't have an answer as to why they believe it. i feel everyone who blithely agrees or disagrees with something needs to ask themselves why they believe something and have factual data to back up their belief.

unfortunately a lot of people stand up for what they believe in, which is part of the problem in our society as they are usually ignorant, backwards, and wrong.
