Why was the US able to outlast and help defeat the communist menace engenered by the Soviet Union?

Communist "menace" is such a heavy-handed term. And besides, we have yet to outlast Communist China, have we?

Essentially, the USSR's economy wasn't doing as well as ours was. It was economics, really. And I wouldn't really consider the USSR true communism anyway.

Your question is odd. We did not "defeat" communism. Russia fell apart due to internal economic problems.

A stronger economy. It's military spending became unsustainable.
Like the USA today as China becomes more economically powerful
