I agree with the previous poster. What size tank do you have? A juvenile Dempsey will get along with any similar size fish (I currently have mine in with a weather loach, a blood parrot, a severum and a baby 2" oscar). However, as adults, they tend to be much more territorial.
Oscars can be good tankmates if the Jack Dempsey is a typical one: typically, they're skittish and will hide. If the Oscar doesn't sense a challenge from the fish, it will leave it alone. Some Dempseys are wusses and others are totally evil once they become adults.
A 45 - 55 gallon tank will be good for a single fish. For a breeding pair, a 75 gallon tank is appropriate.
Tank makes for these guys would be other medium sized medium aggressive cichlids like firemouths, convicts, green terrors etc. as long as the tank is large enough. Pictus cats clown loaches and plecos are good bottom dwellers.

you could continuously placed it in there and shop an eye fixed on it. If it starts to get massacred take it out. If no longer bypass away it in. each and every fish has its very own character. My female pal has a jack dempsey it is so large it ought to stay in a tank with angelfish. Others might attempt to kill each and everything. it surely relies upon on your fish's character.
